Just as Lotus has done with the Evora 2 + 2, Ferrari is adding a grand tourer to its line-up with the introduction of the 2012 Ferrari FF.

The “FF” refers to the fact that this exotic sports car will be equipped with four seats and 4-wheel drive. The 2012 Ferrari FF was unveiled in spring 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, where Ferrari announced that it would replace the retired 612 Scaglietti.

Autoblog reports that the new FF will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (that’s 62 mph for the metrically-challenged) in just 3.7 seconds, and it can reach speeds of up to 208 mph. This makes it the fastest 4-seater in the world, according to Ferrari.

Good Luck getting a Ferrari FF

If these stats have prompted you to pull out your checkbook, good luck getting your hands on an FF. Road and Track reports that only 800 Ferrari FFs will be produced for 2012, and according to the Wall Street Journal, they will each cost over $300,000 with options.

2012 Ferrari FF Auto Insurance Rates

Due to the fact that it’s new to the market and its production numbers are so limited, consumer survey data on average Ferrari FF auto insurance rates is not available. However, it’s safe to assume that if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.

One of the most expensive vehicles for which car insurance data is available is the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, which starts at $183,000. Drivers report that this vehicle costs about $4,374 a year to insure, or $364 per month.

Rates for the Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe, which starts at $160,700, average about $310 per month or $3,713 a year. Estimates indicate that you’ll pay about $3,485 each year to insure an Audi R8, which has an entry-level price of $114,200.

If you plan to use your Ferrari FF mainly for display purposes, with no commuting and very little driving, you might be able to save money on auto insurance by purchasing a specialty policy.

Such a policy not only takes into account the fact that your vehicle is for display purposes, but many specialty insurance companies cover vehicle modifications and offer “agreed value” policies.

These coverage plans allow you and the company to arrive at a fair value for your vehicle, rather than forcing you to purchase a plan that will only reimburse the “actual cash value” of the vehicle if it is totaled. It’s important to note that such policies typically do not cover damage incurred while racing.

2012 Ferrari FF Safety Features

“Ferrari” and “safety” aren’t often heard in the same sentence together. However, it’s nice to know that you’re protected by some safety equipment when you’re approaching 200 mph. The 2012 FF features a 5-mode vehicle dynamic stability system.

For the brave and/or foolhardy, there’s an “Off” setting, and there’s also a “Sport” mode that aims to balance driving pleasure with safety.

For everyday driving, there’s a “Comfort” setting, and the FF also features “Ice-snow” and “Wet” settings for bad weather. This system continuously monitors and adjusts the amount of torque that’s being delivered to each wheel, which means that the FF is scientifically engineered to reduce your likelihood of crashing it.

Ferrari FF vs. the Competition

Ferrari claims that the FF is the fastest thing with four seats, but does that claim stand up to scrutiny? The short answer is a resounding, “Yes!” The 2012 FF’s top speed of 208 mph is a bit faster than what the Mercedes SLS AMG, the Ferrari 458 Italia, or the Lamborghini Gallardo can achieve, and these vehicles are 2-seaters.

The 4-seat Lotus Evora 2 + 2, which costs substantially less than the FF, can hit the 60 mph mark in 4.9 seconds, which is two-tenths of a second longer than the FF takes to get to 62 mph, and its top speed is just 162 mph.

Reviewers say that the Aston Martin DB9 is a more direct competitor for the FF, with its 4-passenger seating capacity and $184,615 base price. However, it’s nowhere near the performer that the 2012 FF is.

Its top speed is just 190 mph, nearly 20 mph less than the FF’s, and it will take 4.8 seconds of full-throttle acceleration to get the DB9 up to 62 mph.

At a savings of over $100,000 compared to the Ferrari FF’s reported base price, though, some exotic car buyers may be willing to accept second place in a few drag races.

2012 Ferrari FF Interior Features

U.S. News and World Report gives the 2012 Ferrari FF high ratings for its interior quality, which is one of the highest scores among exotic sports cars.

Many vehicles in this category see their scores dragged down by cramped cabins that are difficult to enter and exit, excessive road-noise, and lack of cargo space.

If you’re looking for a performance vehicle with a dash of practicality, the FF is one of the few exotic sports cars that combines track-worthy performance with a livable back seat.

Some reviewers say that even passengers taller than six feet will be comfortable in the FF’s rear seat, and the FF incorporates over 28 cubic feet of trunk space.

The 2012 FF features leather sport seats and steering wheel-mounted controls. There’s also dual-zone climate control, an infotainment system with two screens, and a stereo system with six channels.

Some reviewers note that the FF’s navigation system is cheap, considering the car’s cost, and one test driver reported that his size-13 feet were too large to navigate the FF’s pedals comfortably.
