About the Volkswagen Jetta

If you’re considering the purchase of a Volkswagen Jetta, you’ll be interested to know that this family sedan has been available since 1970, although it has been sold worldwide under other names like Atlantic, Fox, and Sagitar.

Consumers in the U.S. and abroad have purchased over 6.6 million Volkswagen Jetta cars, so you’re in good company.

Trim choices for the Volkswagen Jetta include the Jetta S, which starts at about $15,995, and the Jetta SE, which retails for $18,995 and up. The Jetta SEL has an available sport package and sunroof, and 17-inch alloy wheels are included in the $21,395 MSRP.

The luxury TDI Jetta starts at $22,995 and includes a 2.0 liter, 140 horsepower Clean Diesel engine.

Specifications for the Volkswagen Jetta

All Volkswagen Jetta models include free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Other standard safety features which can really help with obtaining car insurance discounts include six air bags for safety, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), heated mirrors and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The SE model features an upgraded 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower. This is a significant improvement over the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in the Jetta S, but buyers should be aware that the slightly larger engine compromises fuel efficiency.

The Jetta S gets 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, but the SE model gets one less gallon per mile on average (23/33 mpg).

Buyers who upgrade to the Jetta SEL from the SE will not sacrifice fuel efficiency, and they’ll gain comfort and convenience in the form of an RNS 315 navigation system, heated seats, fog lights and a push-button start.

TDI Clean Diesel owners enjoy significantly improved fuel economy over other Jetta models, getting 30 city gallons per mile and 42 highway miles per gallon.

The TDI does not include SEL features like the navigation system and push-button start, but they can be purchased as part of an options package.

Volkswagen Jetta Safety Features

A vehicle’s safety ratings can be an important factor in its insurance premiums, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet released the ratings for the 2011 models.

However, previous Jetta models have received four out of five stars, which is in line with other comparable small cars.

The Volkswagen Jetta also has some impressive safety features that come standard, including an Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS).

When the vehicle’s air bags deploy, the crash response system automatically takes proactive measures to protect the occupants’ safety, like shutting off the fuel pump, unlocking the doors and activating the hazard lights.

Volkswagen Jetta Car Insurance Rates

When you’re researching a new car, it’s important to consider the vehicle’s total cost of ownership in your comparisons.

One vehicle might have a lower sticker price than another, but it could have a higher long-term cost in terms of maintenance, fuel costs and depreciation.

Another critical aspect of cost of ownership that many buyers forget to consider is the cost of car insurance.

For a Volkswagen Jetta, you can expect to pay about $1,350 a year for car insurance, which breaks down to about $112 a month.

This means you could save $100 or more per year on car insurance if you choose a Volkswagen Jetta over a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla, but this will vary depending on which model you choose.

Don’t forget to enter your zip code in the box to get the most precise car insurance rates for your Volkswagen Jetta.
