Car insurance for the Ford Focus is very affordable due to the price of the vehicle and its high safety ratings (for 2008 models and later).

While models before 2008 were not received well by car safety rating agencies such as the Insurance Information Institute today’s Ford Focus scores high and car insurance companies have recognized this in auto insurance premiums.

About the Ford Focus

The Ford Focus was launched in 1999 (model year 2000) replacing the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer and is ranked #40 on the list of best selling cars nationwide.

Although the 2000 model did receive numerous awards including the “North American Car of the Year” the vehicle was never embraced highly by car safety rating agencies until the model year 2008.

However even with the poor safety ratings during the early years of this vehicle the Focus still managed to accumulate accolades such as:

  • Consumers Digest Best Buy Rating (2005)
  • Car and Driver’s Ten Best list (2000 to 2004)
  • Automobile Magazine’s Automobile of the Year (2000)
  • MotorWeek’s Best Small Car (2000)

The second generation Ford Focus has performed much better with safety rating agencies and in 2009 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published crash test results for both the coupe and sedan scoring 4 stars in most categories.

Ford Focus Safety Features

The 2011 Ford Focus has several safety features which help with obtaining car insurance discounts however considering its price point the number of safety features is much less than many cars of comparable value.

Some of the safety features available on the 2011 Ford Focus include:

  • Antilock Brakes with AdvanceTrac® Electronic stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Six Standard Airbags with a reinforced steel safety cage
  • Personal Safety System which includes safety belt pretensioner, crash severity sensor, restraint control module and more

Much of the marketing for the 2011 Ford Focus has been done around its affordable price and its technology features such as the SYNC In-car Connectivity System which allows the operation of Bluetooth phones and audio players by voice command however at the end of the day there are much better vehicles around at the same price with the same options.

One of the interesting standard features of the 2011 model is the MyKey™ Technology which provides owners an option to customize keys telling the car how to drive such as limiting speed and restricting radio use until a seatbelt is buckled.

This is a very unique feature and one which many parents of young drivers see great value in. Similar MyKey™ systems will probably be introduced to most vehicles in the coming years as it is one of the best new car technology features around.

How much is the Ford Focus?

For the 2011 year the Ford Focus is priced very affordable with the base model starting at $16,640 and the top model just under $20,000 (before destination charges, taxes etc.). The 4 models available for 2011 include:

  • Focus Sedan S
  • Focus Sedan SE
  • Focus Sedan SES
  • Focus Sedan SL

The Ford Focus is also highly fuel efficient getting up to 35mpg powered by a 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder engine. This combination of price and fuel efficiency is one of the main reasons why this vehicle has sold so many units.

Car Insurance for the Ford Focus?

Auto insurance rates average just under $1,300 annually for a new Ford Focus with most women drivers enjoying a little lower rates.

Older models do not receive as much of a discounted rate as other vehicles since the Focus has one of the lowest depreciation schedules which is good for retaining value but not so good for lower car insurance rates.

Part of the formula for calculating auto insurance premiums is based on replacement value and the low depreciation is a small disadvantage for insuring an older model.

Is the Ford Focus more expensive to insure compared to vehicles in its class?

Small sedans are relatively high to insure due to the increased risk of substantial damage in a car accident but the Ford Focus insurance rates are less than most cars of comparable class.

While you certainly won’t save $500 annually by buying a comparable car made by another manufacturer you can save a few dollars by opting to purchase this vehicle.

Who has the best car insurance rates for the Ford Focus?

The infamous question and there is no right answer. Almost all car insurance companies insure the Focus so most drivers will have a wealth of options to choose from.

The best car insurance company can only found by matching your unique needs up with potential providers and comparing policy details and rates equally.

Some of the things you should do before starting a car insurance comparison search are:

  • Learn about coverage (know what you are buying)
  • Research car insurance discounts
  • Pull your credit score and correct any mistakes

Car insurance for the Ford Focus is affordable for most drivers but as important as it to get low car insurance rates you should always focus on the details of coverage as the real test of auto insurance is when you need to file a claim.

Understanding auto insurance and the details of you policy before having to file a claim can not only save you money but also reduce your exposure to personal liability in the event of an accident.
