The cost of insuring your Volkswagen Routan will depend on factors like the length of your driving history and the trim level that you choose.

Insuring the base model 2011 VW Routan for five years will cost the typical owner with over six years of driving history $4,836, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) reports.

A driver with just 3-6 years of auto insurance history will pay closer to $9,025, and typical rates for an inexperienced driver with less than three years’ history will be about $13,939.

Drivers who select higher trim levels can also anticipate higher auto insurance rates.

For instance, a 2011 Routan SEL with an optional navigation system will cost about $5,676 to insure for five years, according to the NADA. This rate is more than $500 higher than that for the base model Volkswagen Routan.

By way of comparison, consumers who select the Dodge Grand Caravan can expect 5-year auto insurance rates of around $7,320, and Honda Odyssey owners will pay roughly $5,900 for five years, Edmunds reports.

Toyota Sienna owners could pay $7,500 or more for auto insurance. Enter your zip code above to view personalized auto insurance rates for the Volkswagen Routan!

Volkswagen Routan Pricing and Trims

With a starting MSRP of $26,930, the base model Volkswagen Routan is one of the more expensive minivans on the market. The Chrysler Town and Country, which starts at $30,260, is the priciest vehicle in this class, followed by the Honda Odyssey and the Nissan Quest.

If you’re looking to save a few thousand dollars, consider the Toyota Sienna, which starts at $25,060, or the Kia Sedona, which begins at $24,595. The Dodge Caravan has an entry-level MSRP of $21,800, and the Mazda 5’s $19,195 sticker price is the lowest in this category.

You’ll have to sacrifice a bit of space to take advantage of this price, though.

In addition to the base model S trim, consumers can upgrade to the Routan SE trim, which costs $31,770, or the SEL trim, which starts at $37,390. The SEL Premium edition begins at $43,240, which is more than $15,000 higher than the price for the base model.

Both SEL trims feature a power liftgate, a sunroof, 3-zone air conditioning, and a rearview camera.

On the SEL Premium trim only, you’ll find 8-way power front seats, a premium 9-speaker sound system, fog lights, and rear parking sensors.

All 2011 Volkswagen Routan models come standard with a 3.6 liter V6 engine that generates 283 horsepower and incorporates a 6-speed manual transmission. Edmunds approves of the Routan’s ride and handling, but says that the Honda Odyssey is still the class leader in this regard.

Inside, the base model Routan comes equipped with a 6-speaker sound system that plays CDs and MP3s. A touchscreen entertainment system with a built-in hard drive is optional for the SE trim, as is a rear-seat entertainment/navigation system.

VW Routan Passenger and Cargo Space

The 2011 VW Routan seats seven, and the vehicle’s cargo volume with the rear seat folded down is 83 cubic feet. Although reviewers like Consumer Guide say that removing the second-row seats increases cargo volume, doing so is no picnic.

On the plus side, reviewers agree that the Routan’s seats are more comfortable than those in Chrysler’s Town and Country, with which it shares a manufacturing platform.

Consumer Guide and Car and Driver both agree that the Routan’s interior materials are also higher-quality than the more expensive Town and Country’s, although they note that certain low-quality elements can still be found throughout the cabin.

Fuel Economy for the Volkswagen Routan

The 2011 Volkswagen Routan’s fuel economy is near the bottom of its class. It gets 17 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway, fuel economy stats that are identical to those of the Dodge Grand Caravan.

The Chrysler Town and Country has the worst fuel economy in the minivan class, at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The 2012 Mazda 5 minivan gets the best fuel economy in this class, at 21 city mpg and 28 highway mpg.

However, it’s also the smallest vehicle in this class. The Honda Odyssey offers excellent highway fuel economy of 27 mpg, but its city gas mileage of 18 mpg is unremarkable.

Volkswagen Routan Safety Ratings and Features

The federal government hasn’t subjected the 2011 Volkswagen Routan to crash testing yet, but this minivan did undergo front, rear, and side-impact tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned top ratings of “Good” in these tests, but its ability to withstand rollovers was not assessed.

Since it was not subjected to all four of these crash tests, it was not eligible for the IIHS’ “Top Safety Pick” designation, which the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey both received.

Safety features with which the 2011 Routan is equipped include anti-lock brakes, brake assist, electronic stability control, and side-curtain air bags.

Reliability Ratings and Warranty for the Routan

The Volkswagen Routan earned a Predicted Reliability score of 6.0 from J.D. Power and Associates. It shares this rating with several other minivans, including the Mazda 5, the Nissan Quest, and the Dodge Grand Caravan.

The Kia Sedona’s reliability score of 5.0 is the lowest for any minivan, and the Honda Odyssey’s score of 9.0 is the highest.

The 2011 VW Routan comes with a standard powertrain warranty that extends for 60,000 miles or 60 months, plus a 36,000 mile/36 month limited warranty.

This New Vehicle Limited Warranty includes free scheduled maintenance though Volkswagen’s Carefree Maintenance Program. It also includes complimentary roadside assistance.
