According to Edmunds, the Porsche Panamera is one of the few super luxury sedans on the road that finds a truly happy medium between comfort and athleticism.

The 2011 Panamera’s innovative design gives it a spacious backseat that can be folded away to reveal impressive cargo capacity.

U.S. News and World Report describes the Porsche Panamera’s interior as “private jet-like” and yet this luxury sedan still delivers performance stats that are on par with exotics like the Ferrari Scaglietti.

With its base price of $74,400, the Porsche Panamera is the 3rd most expensive sedan out of the seven non-hybrid vehicles in the super luxury class. It starts nearly $20,000 below the Mercedes-Benz S Class, which is the most expensive.

The Audi A8 comes in 2nd, with a base price of just over $78,000.

It’s important to look at long-term ownership costs when you are comparing vehicles though, and not just the sticker price.

Read on to learn how the Panamera compares to other super luxury vehicles when it comes to auto insurance premiums, repair and maintenance costs and fuel expenses.

Porsche Panamera Auto Insurance Rates

Edmunds reports that with its estimated annual car insurance bill of just over $2,200, the 2011 Porsche Panamera is one of the least expensive super luxury vehicles to insure, on average.

This is particularly surprising, given the Panamera’s high base price relative to some competitors, like the $67,130 Lexus LS. Estimated auto insurance premiums for the Audi A8 are also on the low end of the spectrum, at approximately $2,263 per year.

According to Edmunds’ data, auto insurance rates for the competing BMW 7 Series are also in this same neighborhood, costing the average owner just under $2,300 per year.

Expected rates for the Mercedes S Class are among the highest in the super luxury category, at over $2,500 annually. This is to be expected though, given that the S Class is by far the most expensive non-hybrid vehicle in its class.

Fuel Costs for the Porsche Panamera

Auto insurance rates for the 2011 Panamera are typically lower than those for its competitors, and it is also one of the least expensive super luxury cars in terms of fuel costs.

According to Businessweek, the base model 2011 Panamera has the best fuel economy of any non-hybrid sedan in its class, at 18 city miles per gallon and 27 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Audi A8 comes in a close second at 17 city mpg and 27 highway mpg.

What are the top 10 luxury cars in America?

If your sedan’s environmental impact is of concern, and you’re willing to pay more to minimize it, consider the Mercedes S Class Hybrid or the Lexus LS Hybrid.

You’ll pay $20,000 to $30,000 more for these vehicles, and their highway fuel economy is actually worse than the 27 mpg advertised for the A8 and the Panamera, but they both save 2 mpg in city driving.

For drivers who spend the majority of their time on city streets this fuel savings could be worthwhile.

Maintenance and Repair Costs for the Panamera

According to the NADA Guide, scheduled maintenance for the Porsche Panamera will cost the average owner approximately $4,513 over five years.

This is about $100 less than estimates for the BMW 7 Series’ scheduled maintenance costs and nearly $2,000 less than estimates of scheduled maintenance costs for the 2011 Mercedes S Class, the Audi A8 and the Lexus LS.

Repair costs are the one area in which the Porsche Panamera is not a best-in-class value. This luxury sedan comes with a 4-year/50,000 mile warranty that is comparable to warranties offered by Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

However, Porsche does not include free scheduled maintenance in its warranty like BMW does.

Edmunds expects that repair costs for the Porsche Panamera will be around $3,400 over five years, which is a few hundred dollars more than drivers of the S Class, 7 Series and A8 sedans can expect to pay. Lexus LS owners can expect repair bills of just over $1,000 for five years.

Porsche Panamera Safety Reviews

The Porsche Panamera is clearly a good buy when you consider its low costs for auto insurance, fuel, and scheduled maintenance compared to its competitors.

But what about safety? Limited production vehicles like the 2011 Panamera are not usually tested by the federal government’s ratings agency or by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety due to cost constraints.

However, super luxury sedans typically have a host of high-tech safety gadgets to reassure their owners and the Panamera is no exception. It is outfitted with the Porsche Stability Management system, which adjusts traction and brake pressure to counter over- or under-steering.

The 2011 Panamera is also equipped with an active bonnet system that raises the hood slightly to reduce injury in the event that the car strikes a pedestrian.

U.S. News says that the Porsche Panamera has no optional safety features; everything is standard, including side curtain air bags, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and anti-theft protection.

The Panamera’s body is also designed to protect vehicle occupants in a crash with carefully-crafted, super-strong support members constructed from magnesium, aluminum and stainless steel.

Porsche Panamera Performance

Edmunds calls the performance of the V6 base model Panamera “astounding,” while the V8 engine is described as “impressive.” The optional turbocharged engine’s acceleration is “shocking” according to Edmunds, and “scary” according to U.S. News.

The base model can go from a standstill to 60 mph in just six short seconds, while the turbocharged version of the Panamera can accelerate to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.
