If you are shopping for a super-luxurious sedan like the Audi A8 there a pool of refined, high-end vehicles to choose from.

All offer opulent interiors, exceptional performance and refined handling so it can be difficult to determine which vehicle is the best fit for you.

One additional consideration that can help narrow down the options is long-term ownership cost. Small variations in maintenance and repair costs, fuel expenses and auto insurance rates can add up to thousands of dollars over the time you drive the vehicle.

Audi A8 Car Insurance Rates

When you compare the Audi R8 to other popular top-ranked luxury sedans, auto insurance rates for the Audi A8 are lower than average. Edmunds estimates that you’ll pay about $11,314 over five years to insure the Audi A8, which breaks down to approximately $2,263 per year.

The average BMW 7 Series owner pays about $11,487 to insure the vehicle over the first five years, and Edmunds estimates that Lexus LS owners will pay about $12,076 total.

The Mercedes-Benz S Class is the most expensive to insure in this category. Edmunds’ data indicates that this luxury sedan costs owners about $12,666 over five years for auto insurance premiums, or approximately $2,253 annually.

Repair and Maintenance for the Audi A8

Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus all offer comprehensive warranty programs that cover repairs for the first four years or 50,000 miles their vehicles are on the road. This means that repair costs for all models are almost zero through the fourth year of ownership.

Repair bills could come sooner, though, if you put lots of miles on your vehicle and hit the 50,000 mile mark early.

It’s also important to note that with the exception of Lexus, none of these companies offer separate powertrain warranties. Lexus offers a 7-year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty in addition to the 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Perhaps for this reason, estimated 5-year repair costs for the Lexus LS are much lower, at $1,027, than they are for other luxury sedans. Edmunds estimates that repair costs for the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S Class will top $2,700 for the first five years.

What are the most popular luxury cars in America?

Scheduled maintenance costs for the Audi A8 are covered under warranty for the first 5,000 miles or 12 months that you own the vehicle. BMW offers an even more generous perk, covering all maintenance costs for the 7 Series during the 4-year/50,000 mile warranty period.

As a result, scheduled maintenance costs for the 7 Series are much lower, at $4,636, than they are for the competition.

Despite the free first year of maintenance, Edmunds estimates that 5-year costs for the Audi A8 will be around $6,358. Maintenance costs are expected to be approximately $6,617 for the S Class and $6,785 for the Lexus LS.

Fuel Costs for the Audi A8

Due to their size and level of performance, fuel costs for luxury sedans are generally high and the Audi A8 is no exception.

However, it has excellent fuel economy for its class outperforming all other gasoline-powered luxury cars and even some hybrids. It gets 17 miles per gallon in the city, which is about average for a large luxury sedan, and 27 mpg in highway driving, which is excellent for a vehicle in this class.

It performs better than the S Class Hybrid, the Lexus LS Hybrid and the BMW 7 Series Hybrid in highway driving, so the A8 will definitely save you money on fuel over the competition. This makes it an excellent value if you plan to put lots of highway miles on the vehicle.

Audi A8 Safety

As is the case with most super-luxury sedans, the Audi A8 has not undergone safety testing by the federal government or the insurance industry.

However, it features a reassuring menu of high-tech safety features like electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control and side-curtain airbags.

Owners can upgrade the vehicle’s safety features by opting for Audi’s Driver Assistance Package, which includes blind spot and lane departure warning signals as well as a pre-collision system and a nighttime pedestrian detection system.

Additional standard safety features include the following:

  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Whiplash protection system
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Electronic brake assist

Audi A8 Reviews

On U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of “Super Luxury Cars,” the Audi A8 ties with the BMW 7 Series and the Lexus LS for 3rd place. The Mercedes S Class and the Porsche Panamera tie for 1st place on the list.

The Audi A8 also won Edmunds’ Technology Breakthrough Award for its innovative safety and navigation features.

In addition to its cutting-edge, user-friendly technology, reviewers like Businessweek also appreciate the A8’s “beautiful” interior styling and “unusually comfortable” seating.

A8s with Audi’s Premium Package feature 22-way adjustable seats with heating, massage, and ventilation capabilities. One minor complaint is that the A8’s trunk space is limited compared to other large luxury sedans.

Another complaint reviewers have is that the 2011 Audi A8’s 4.2 liter, V8 engine is a tad underpowered compared to the competition.

Consumer Guide also finds the vehicle’s shifter difficult to use. When it comes to handling, though, the critics are all smiles.

CNET’s reviewer finds the car’s handling “astounding” given its size, and Automobile Magazine and Road and Track are both impressed with how “responsive” the steering is.

Another advantage that the A8 wields over its competition is its standard all-wheel drive.
