The 2012 Cadillac SRX is priced starting at $35,185 and in the same category as vehicles like the 2012 Audi Q5 and Infiniti EX.

Although the 2012 SRX ranks near the bottom of its class, the auto press still has plenty of nice things to say about it. U.S. News reports that its luxurious interior appointments will meet with luxury SUV drivers’ expectations, and its sleek, stylish exterior design is sure to impress.

Reviewers also applaud Cadillac’s decision to do away with the underpowered 3.0 liter engine that was standard on previous models. All 2012 Cadillac SRX models are now equipped with a powerful, smooth-shifting 3.6 liter V6.

Mediocre Fuel Ratings

One drawback to Cadillac SRX ownership is the vehicle’s mediocre fuel economy ratings. It gets just 17 city mpg and 24 highway mpg. These aren’t worst-in-class ratings, but you can do much better.

For instance, the Audi Q5 gets 20 city mpg and 27 highway mpg. Another area of weakness for the SRX is its off-road performance. If you’re looking to tackle rough roads, the LR2 and the Range Rover Evoque from Land Rover are both better options.

How much is auto insurance for a Cadillac SRX?

Data compiled by NADA indicates an average $6,884 5-year car insurance bill for the 2012 Cadillac SRX. Drivers who pay annually will see an average rate of $1,377, although insurance rates tend to gradually decline the longer that you’ve owned a vehicle. If you pay your auto insurance bills monthly, you should expect a rate of about $115.

These projected rates are based on the assumption that you have over six years of driving experience, though. Cadillac SRX owners with between three and six years of experience behind the wheel will pay about $2,576 annually, and the NADA estimates that the rate for drivers with under three years’ experience will approach $3,900 per year.

You’ll also pay more to insure your 2012 SRX if you opt for a higher trim level.

For example, if you own a Cadillac SRX Premium Collection model with all-wheel drive, you’ll pay about $1,742 a year for auto insurance. That’s over $300 more than what owners of the base model are expected to pay.

2012 Cadillac SRX Maintenance

Your 2012 SRX will be covered under Cadillac’s Premium Care Maintenance Program until its 4-year/50,000 mile limited warranty expires. For most drivers, that will occur during the fourth year of ownership, when out-of-pocket maintenance bills total about $1,325.

For the fifth year’s scheduled maintenance bill, drivers usually pay just $181, for a relatively low 5-year scheduled maintenance cost of $1,507. The SRX is one of the only compact luxury SUVs to offer complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Cadillac SRX Repair Expenses

The NADA predicts that repair bills for your 2012 Cadillac SRX should also be relatively low. Once the vehicle’s limited warranty expires, which is usually during the fourth year of ownership, you’ll pay about $710 for repairs.

The following year, the SRX’s repair bill will be approximately $1,065. This means you’ll have spent just $1,775 on repairs after you’ve owned your 2012 SRX for five years.

It’s important to note, too, that the SRX comes with an unusual 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty in addition to its limited warranty. Owners of other luxury SUVs are generally responsible for all repairs after their vehicles’ limited warranties expire.

Cadillac SRX Safety Ratings

The 2012 Cadillac SRX has already been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Under the more stringent tests for this model year, the SRX still managed to earn the IIHS’ highest rating in all assessments.

These include front and side-impact crash tests, as well as a roof strength test to determine how well the vehicle would protect passengers if it rolled over.

There’s also a rear-impact test, which measures the vehicle’s ability to reduce whiplash in passengers. The SRX’s excellent performance in these tests earned it a Top Safety Pick title.

The only safety test that the federal government has conducted so far on the 2012 SRX is the rollover test. This test differs from the IIHS’ roof-strength assessment because it measures the probability of a rollover, rather than the vehicle’s crashworthiness in such a collision.

The 2012 SRX earned a 4-star federal rollover rating, which is the second-highest rating out of five. This is a solid score for an SUV.

2012 SRX Trims and Features

Standard features on the base model 2012 SRX include a multi-mode 6-speed automatic transmission, a push-button ignition, dual-zone climate control, and 18-inch wheels. The vehicle’s tech package includes a driver information center with one free year of OnStar access, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and a USB interface.

The 8-speaker audio system is a premium Bose model, and it comes with a 3-month free trial for Sirius satellite radio. This trim level is not available with all-wheel drive.

For an additional $4,000 or so, you can purchase a 2012 SRX Luxury model with power-adjustable leather seats, remote start, an extra-large power sunroof, and park assist.

There’s also a backup camera, a heated steering wheel, and ambient interior lighting. The 2012 SRX’s Performance trim starts at $43,530, and it comes standard with a touch-screen navigation system and an upgraded 10-speaker Bose 5.1 audio system with surround sound.

You can upgrade even further to the 2012 SRX Premium Collection trim for just $2,000 more. It comes with ventilated front seats and rear-seat audio and climate controls.
