The Toyota FJ Cruiser is among one of the top SUV’s sold in Asia and the United States and is also one of the safer Sport Utility Vehicles on the market, but how much does auto insurance cost for a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Compare auto insurance quotes for the Toyota FJ Cruiser and view some safety ratings that the FJ Cruiser has received from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below.

Why are safety ratings important to auto insurance Companies?

The safety features built in to a vehicle are very relevant to the cost of your insurance because the safer a vehicle the higher the likelihood of escaping an auto accident with little or no injury, which in turn saves your auto insurer a great deal of money that would otherwise be paid out on claims.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser has won the IIHS “Top Safety Pick” award numerous times for small SUV’s”

About the Toyota FJ Cruiser

Revealed to the world in 2003, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a throwback style small SUV from Toyota. The FJ Cruiser is a very popular vehicle, both for its reasonable size and unique styling.

The FJ Cruiser is one of the top-selling SUV’s in the world and also one of the safest SUV’s in it’s class. Since 2007 Toyota has added a number of safety features like side air bags and rollover protection that greatly increased the safety of the FJ Cruiser.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Safety Ratings

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determines the safety of a vehicle using five different crash test ratings. For the 2010 model year the results of the NHTSA safety tests for the Toyota FJ Cruiser are below.

These tests are very important because auto insurance companies use them to determine how safe a vehicle is and the risk associated with insuring a particular vehicle.

Toyota FJ Cruiser NHTSA Frontal Crash Test Ratings

The frontal crash test determines how a vehicle will perform when involved in a head on collision, either with another vehicle or any sort of obstacle in or around the road.

The things that safety inspectors look for are how the windows shatter, how the engine performs after taking such a hit as well as if air bags are present and consistently deploy.

Front crash tests are done at a number of speeds, all the way up to highway safety tests which test the durability of a vehicle in a high speed frontal crash.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser received 5/5 stars for the Driver Front, which is the left half of the SUV and 4/5 stars for the Passenger Front, which is the right side of the SUV facing forward. These are very high marks on a scale of 1-5 indicating the FJ Cruiser performs very well in frontal crash tests.

Toyota FJ Cruiser NHTSA Rollover Test Ratings

A rollover test determines how likely it is for a vehicle to flip and roll over and also how much damage a rollover does to passengers as well as the vehicle. The FJ Cruiser fares much more poorly in the rollover test with 3/5 stars.

The reason given for such a low score (60%) is that the FJ Cruiser is a tall vehicle with a relatively high center of gravity which means that it is much more prone to rollovers than cars with lower centers of gravity.

Toyota FJ Cruiser NHTSA Side Crash Test Ratings

The side crash test determines how a vehicle reacts when broadsided by another vehicle from either side. The rating agencies take things like side air bags and how windows shatter, as well as how strong the structure of the vehicle is.

Both the front side crash test and the rear side crash test receive 5/5 stars, the top marks in the small SUV field. The FJ Cruiser really shines in the side crash test.

Toyota FJ Cruiser IIHS Frontal Offset Crash Ratings

The IIHS also does crash tests on vehicles, and with the FJ Cruiser they tested what is known as a Frontal Offset Crash. This test aims to determine how a vehicle holds up when subjected to speeds at or above forty miles an hour. In all frontal offset crash tests the FJ Cruiser performed very well.

There are four ratings given for each segment of the test, Good, Acceptable, Marginal and Poor. In each area where the FJ Cruiser was tested it received a “Good” rating.

This included the overall safety, the structure/ safety cage effectiveness, protection for the head/ neck as well as the effectiveness of seatbelts in the vehicle.

Overall the Toyota FJ Cruiser is a relatively safe SUV. While it shines in nearly every category, including frontal and side crashes as well as frontal offset crash test and restraint tests Toyota has some work to do with regards to rollovers in order to achieve a top rating.

While the vast majority of safety features are more than adequate a 60 percent rating on rollovers is near unacceptable.

However when insurers decide your insurance premiums for the Toyota FJ Cruiser they do take into account the vehicles relative safety compared to others in the market, and rollovers are a problem for many SUV’s.

There are also a number of standard safety features in the FJ Cruiser, like side air bags for passengers that do make the vehicle safer than many of the standard offerings from competitors in the SUV market.

How much is auto insurance for a Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Auto insurance rates for the Toyota FJ Cruiser are very reasonable with a typical good driver averaging around $1,400 annually for full coverage auto insurance on a national scale.

However average auto insurance rates are really only good for comparing the average cost of auto insurance by model and may not reflect your individual premiums.
