The 2011 Buick Enclave is available at three price points. The base model Enclave CX starts at $35,865, and all-wheel drive can be added for $2,000.

The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) estimates that the average driver with more than six years’ on-road experience will pay $5,644 over five years to insure this vehicle. That works out to a monthly rate of $96.

The mid-range model in the 2011 Buick Enclave lineup is called the CXL-1, and it has an introductory price of $38,980. The $2,000 upgrade to all-wheel drive is also available for this trim. The NADA’s data indicates that auto insurance rates for this trim level, like the vehicle’s base price, are slightly higher than those for the Enclave CX.

The typical driver will pay about $5,808 for five years of coverage, according to the NADA. Although this appears to be a large increase, it works out to a difference of less than $1 per month.

For the highest-level Enclave CXL-2, the starting MSRP is $42,345, and adding all-wheel drive brings that up to $44,345. Buying five years’ worth of auto insurance coverage for the premium Buick Enclave model will cost the typical owner $6,070, or just over $100 per month.

Auto Insurance Rates for Competing Midsize SUV’s

Compared to other midsize SUVs like the Dodge Durango and the Ford Explorer, the 2011 Buick Enclave’s 5-year auto insurance rate estimate of $5,644 is fairly high. The NADA expects that typical drivers will pay 5-year rates of $5,423 to insure the Durango, and just over $5,000 for the Explorer’s auto insurance coverage.

The projected 5-year rate of $5,600 for the Chevy Traverse and the Mazda CX-9 is also slightly less than the predicted auto insurance rate for the Enclave.

Buick Enclave Interior Features

Along with the Ford Explorer, the 2011 Buick Enclave is a top-ranked vehicle in the midsize SUV class. A big reason for this high ranking is its luxurious interior.

Edmunds and Consumer Reports both describe the Enclave’s cabin as “upscale,” with high-quality materials and a classy design.

Features are generous, even in the base model. The Enclave CX has an 8-way adjustable power driver’s seat, Bluetooth compatibility, keyless entry, and a tilting and telescoping steering wheel.

A navigation system is optional for the CLX models, and buyers can upgrade their vehicles’ entertainment systems even further by adding navigation and entertainment features to the rear seat.

The rear-seat system includes two sets of wireless headphones, a DVD player with a remote control, and a 10-speaker premium Bose sound system.

Buick Enclave Performance

All Buick Enclave models are outfitted with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, and a 6-speed automatic transmission is available. Consumer Guide considers the Buick Enclave’s 288 horsepower satisfactory, although it notes that the front-wheel-drive models have a bit more punch than the all-wheel-drive models do.

Kelley Blue Book describes the Enclave’s driving dynamics as “engaging.” Consumer Guide approves of the Enclave’s “powerful” braking, and says that the vehicle is agile for its size.

However, Edmunds points out that the Enclave is “more ponderous” than some competitors.

Fuel Economy for the Buick Enclave

The standard front-wheel drive Enclave models get 17 city mpg and 24 highway mpg. Adding all-wheel drive lowers city fuel economy by one mile per gallon and highway fuel economy by two miles per gallon.

The base model Buick Enclave’s fuel economy statistics are identical to those offered by the Chevrolet Traverse, the Ford Flex, and the GMC Acadia, but there are much better options available in the midsize SUV class if gas mileage is a concern for you.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid boasts the best fuel economy in this category, but the Kia Sorento and Toyota Venza are gasoline-powered SUVs that round out the top three. Both get 27 highway mpg and 20 or more city mpg.

Buick Enclave Seating and Cargo

The standard Enclave models can seat six passengers, not including the driver. They feature two captain’s chairs in the second row, but Buick offers consumers the option of switching these chairs out for a bench seat that accommodates three passengers.

U.S. News asserts that the Enclave’s cargo capacity is better than that offered by most competitors. At 115 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded down, it offers a larger cargo area than the Lincoln MKX, and the Chevrolet Traverse’s cargo bay is larger than the Enclave’s by less than 1.5 cubic feet.

Consumer Guide reports that the Enclave’s cargo area is adequate even with all seats in use, thanks to an under-floor compartment.

Crash Test Results for the Enclave

The 2011 Buick Enclave was designated a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). To achieve this honor, a vehicle must earn the highest score of “Good” from the IIHS in rear-impact, front-impact, side-impact, and rollover crash tests.

The Buick Enclave was not alone in earning this honor, though. Other “Top Safety Picks” in the midsize SUV category include the following:

  • Toyota Highlander and Venza
  • Ford Flex and Edge
  • Chevrolet Equinox
  • Hyundai Santa Fe

Buick Enclave Safety Features

All Buick Enclave models are outfitted with class-competitive safety equipment like anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronic vehicle stability. OnStar crash response and crisis assist systems are also included on all Buick Enclaves.

The Enclave CXL-1 and -2 models both incorporate rear parking assist and rear backup cameras. These features are optional on the Enclave CX.
