Consumer ratings are not the only factors in determining how an auto insurance company ranks. Some are listed according to other aspects, such as their financial strength and capacity to fulfill their obligations to policyholders.

It is a good idea to research a number of different things before deciding on which company to go with.

Consumer Reviews

There are a number of companies whose business it is to survey consumers and corroborate the results. J.D. Power and Associates is one and Consumer Reports is another.

The goal of these companies is to help guide you in finding the right service or product for your needs.

J.D. Power is one of the leading companies to publish survey results from multiple industries. Car insurance is one of them. It has gathered information about a variety of categories to help you find the right insurance company.

To help narrow your search, you can choose to see the ratings of not only car insurance providers, but also of insurance claims and the purchase experience. Under the category of providers, it compares results in regards to pricing, policy offerings, contacting the insurer, payment and billing, and overall satisfaction.

It compares a large number of companies and then picks an award winner.

If finding a company with a great claims process is your priority, you can compare how companies rate in terms of the appraisal process, first notice of loss, repair process, service interaction, rental car experience, settlement, and overall satisfaction.

Under the purchase experience category, you can compare price, policy offerings, call center representative, local agent, and how each website rates.

Financial Strength

There are certain companies and websites that rate car insurance companies according to their financial strength and outlook. There are a number of companies that specifically look at the financials of insurance companies and rate them accordingly.

Some of these companies include A.M. Best, Weiss Ratings, Moody’s, and Standard and Poors.

The ratings that these companies give to insurance companies are independent opinions that report on their debt obligations and creditworthiness. They evaluate the operating performance, balance street strength, and business profile of each company.

Each insurance company is given a rating from “A++” to “F.” If a company has a rating of “B+” or above, it is considered to be financially secure. A company is considered to be financially vulnerable with a rating of “B” and below.

If a company has a rating of “S”, it means that their evaluation has been suspended due to lack of adequate information.

When you are deciding from which car insurance company to purchase a policy, you should go to the website of one of the companies, such as A. M. Best and see what its financial rating is.

A company that is financially secure will be better able to pay out claims not only now, but in the future as well.

Category Ratings

Some websites will rate companies in regards to certain categories. If you are part of a military family, you can find out which companies are considered to be the best for your insurance needs.

Some companies are able to offer better policies to high-risk drivers than others, and some are better for students.

The companies that offer this service will usually take information from places like J.D. Power and Associates and other sources to compile the results. These ratings can help you if you are looking for insurance for your specific needs.

One thing you should not do is choose an insurance company based off of splashy television or radio ads. Just because the company claims it is the best doesn’t mean that it is the right one for you and your family.

You should do research on a number of different companies before choosing one. A smaller, lesser-known company may be able to offer you a better policy at a better price than some of the big insurance companies.

It is worth taking the extra time to find the right policy.
