Drivers in New Jersey have a wealth of auto insurance companies to choose from however their options are not as great compared to many states.

How much is auto insurance in New Jersey?

New Jersey auto insurance laws are also rather complicated compared to other states, as drivers have a choice between opting for a standard coverage policy (comparable to typical auto insurance in states with tort law) and a limited right to sue policy (comparable to no-fault auto insurance).

During the term of a policy you cannot change your option so it’s critical to understand the differences between the two before accepting coverage.

Drivers also have an option to purchase a watered-down down version of auto insurance called the “BASIC POLICY” which offers only bare minimum liability insurance.

By default this “basic policy” includes the limited right to sue without an option to change. Only a small percentage of drivers accept the basic policy and if you can afford to buy more coverage it certainly makes a lot of sense.

The New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance also recently announced a special policy option for drivers who are eligible for Federal Medicaid with hospitalization.

Such drivers can obtain an auto insurance policy with medical coverage-only at a fixed cost of $365 annually.

How can I save money on auto insurance?

Whatever auto insurance coverage you choose in New Jersey it’s critical to understand that this coverage option will also extend to your spouse, children, other relatives in the household and passengers and their right to claims under your auto insurance coverage.

The jury is still out on which type of auto insurance is better so you really need to speak with someone familiar with your unique situation (and properly licensed) to give advice well before purchasing a policy.

However, the best auto insurance companies can really only be found by shopping around and requesting quotes as each provider as their own way of calculating rates.

Even for good drivers the cost of auto insurance can vary by up to $200 or more for the same coverage from different providers so you need to shop around and narrow down your potential list of insurers.
