The Hanover Group is one of the oldest companies in America based in Worcester, Massachusetts, and operating continuously since 1852.

The company has consistently paid cash dividends to its shareholders every year since its inception, one of the few American businesses to be able to make such a claim.

In 1993, the company renamed its insurance division the Allmerica Financial Corporation, which held the property and casualty segments of the company.

Allmerica then became one of the 500 largest publicly-traded companies in the country and re-purchased the other branches of the original firm. In 2005, the company re-took the Hanover name, and has remained simple “The Hanover” since that time.

The Hanover Auto Insurance Ratings

The Hanover has maintained consistently “Excellent” ratings with A.M. Best, a measure of financial stability, and also with Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s.

The company has subsidiaries and associations which are involved in international business as well, and employees work in companies in Asia, Europe, and other places around the globe.

Over 4,000 employees work for The Hanover, and the company sells policies through a network of 2,000 independent agents across the United States, relying on mostly direct-marketing strategies to advertise its products. The company has a large online presence but does not do much television advertising.

Auto Insurance Coverage from the Hanover Group

Today the company offers automobile, homeowners, personal property and business insurance, as well as a variety of specialty policies such as personalized umbrella coverage and policies for hard-to-insure items such as vintage cars, antiques and valuable collector’s pieces.

The company has ties with Lloyd’s of London as well, to underwrite and insure unusual coverage. The company maintains offices across the nation, and customers can get a rate quote online or from one of the many independent agents selling The Hanover products across the country.

Flexible and Custom Auto Insurance from Hanover

The Hanover’s auto insurance division sells a variety of policies to meet every need. The Hanover will craft a policy with variable liability limits to meet your state’s requirements, or to increase your liability coverage if you want more than the minimum amount required by your state’s laws.

The Hanover also offers collision payments and comprehensive coverage, medical payment coverage and personal injury protection for no-fault states, and a variety of optional coverage policies, such as roadside assistance and transportation expenses.

For Massachusetts residents, The Hanover also offers value-added coverage, which includes a variety of add-ons, such as pet insurance, trip interruption coverage, and rental car upgrades.

Other options may be available in your state, based on state insurance regulations and market demand.

Hanover Auto Insurance Discounts

The Hanover’s discounts can help lower your auto insurance premiums significantly. Many customers save a great deal on auto, homeowners and personal insurance by bundling policies under the “Household Rewards” program.

You can also get extra coverage and benefits, such as single loss deductibles, guaranteed renewal and child restrain credit.

For autos only, The Hanover offers discounts for paid-in-full premiums, anti-theft vehicle devices, safety features such as airbags and antilock brakes and multi-car discounts.

Drivers who complete an accident prevention courses, have previous carrier credits or even good grades may also be eligible for a discount. Hanover even offers a savings of up to $50 annually by arranging premium payments by automatic draft rather than paying by check.

Hanover Customer Service Review

Customer service is billed as one of The Hanover’s strongest points by the company itself. However, in the most recent J.D. Power and Associates survey of auto insurance owners,

The Hanover did not fare as well as the company might wish to portray. The Hanover received relatively low ratings in most categories assessed by the Power’s survey, with “below average” ratings in overall customer satisfaction, policy offerings, billing, and pricing, and “average” in the “talking to the insurer” category.

On J.D. Power’s Customer Satisfaction Index, The Hanover ranked 29th out of 33 companies, with a score of 759 out of a possible 1,000 points.

The Hanover is certainly a solid and old company, but its diversification may have contributed to its low customer satisfaction scores.

As the company becomes involved in more businesses at home and abroad, less time may be available to spend with individual customers.

However, if you do not mind managing your account and paying your bill online and dealing directly with the insurer for your claims service, The Hanover may be the company for you.

To find The Hanover’s products, you can visit them online for a direct quote, or search for one of the thousands of independent agents carrying the company’s coverage.
