About Shelter Auto Insurance Company

The company actually began existence as the MFA Mutual Insurance Company in 1914, when seven farmers from Brunswick, Missouri joined forces to purchase supplies at volume prices.

The “farm club” joined others in the state, and in 1946 the MFA Mutual Insurance Company was formed to supply insurance coverage to farmers at reasonable prices.

By the seventh year of operation, MFA Mutual was the largest mutual casualty company in the state. A new corporate office was built in Columbia and the company began to diversify offering different types of insurance (including life and homeowner) to many Missouri citizens.

By the 1960’s the company had expanded into other states, and by 2002 Shelter Insurance was writing over 1 million insurance policies across its service area.

Today, the company is among the top 50 casualty companies in the United States with total assets of over $3 billion and an A.M. Best rating which is consistently high for the last ten years. The company is financially stable and provides coverage for over 2 million people.

Although coverage areas are limited, if you live in one of the 14 states where Shelter does business it may be a good choice for your insurance needs. While life, home and renters insurance are all available, many people primarily deal with Shelter Insurance for auto insurance.

Shelter Auto Insurance Discounts

Drivers can save money on auto insurance premiums with Shelter by taking advantage of several discounts. Drivers with a good driving history will pay less for insurance, and may be eligible for a “safe driving discount” if accident-free for three or more years.

Good students and drivers with factory installed safety equipment on their vehicles can also save money, along with those drivers who have completed a defensive driving course.

Shelter Insurance also offers auto insurance discounts for customers who buy multiple policies or by having your vehicle identification number (VIN) etched in all windows of your car. Military personnel can also receive a special discount.

Shelter Auto Insurance Ratings

Shelter has consistently high customer satisfaction ratings. The company claims a 90% customer satisfaction rate, and the independent firm of J.D. Power and Associates seems to back this up.

In the 2011 J. D. Power survey of automobile insurance customers, Shelter scored “above average” in overall customer satisfaction, policy offerings, pricing, and contacting the insurer; Shelter scored “average” in the billing category.

On J.D. Power’s Customer Satisfaction Index, Shelter received a score of 816 out of 1,000 possible points, placing it third of the 33 companies scored on the Index.

Clearly, Shelter’s customers give it high marks in all areas.

Shelter’s agents operate from dedicated offices throughout its coverage states. To find Shelter Insurance, visit the company website to locate the closest agency.

You also have the option of getting a quote directly from the company on the website and policyholders can even manage their account, pay bills and get immediate help with claims, questions, and changes to your policies on the website or by phone as well.
