Additionally, in side crash tests, the Patriot received a five star rating for both driver and passenger protection.

In rollover crash tests the Patriot earned a four-star rating for both the driver and passengers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) performs similar tests annually. Testing is scored using a measure of poor, marginal, acceptable or good. The testing methods and grading for the Jeep Patriot are as follows:

Frontal Crash Tests are a series of tests done to assess the vehicle’s structure design. The IISH tested the Patriot at a crash test speed of 40mph. In tests for a frontal crash, the Jeep Patriot did well against similar vehicles in its weight class.

For injury protection measures, potential injury protection for the chest, feet and legs received a grade level of Good. During the actual crash test, the seatbelts restrained the dummy’s torso movement, but its head hit the roof and the side pillar.

The vehicle received a “Good” rating in the restraints category but in the prevention of injury measures category, the Patriot was graded simply as “Acceptable” for neck and head injury prevention.

A Rear Crash Test was also done, to check the viability of the head/seat restraints and their protection against whiplash. The performance of the 2010 model improved over their earlier models from 2007 to 2009.

The tests used a crash test dummy which represented the average sized male, and the geometry of the vehicle seats was measured and graded depending on measured distance below and behind the head.

Next, a crash test was performed with a rear-end crash from a car moving at 20 mph. Both head and seat restraints were evaluated, and 2007 to 2009 models of the were also rated Average overall.

On a positive note, the ratings for seat and head restraint as well as overall safety reached a “Good” rating for both the 2010 and 2011 models. All tests were performed using vehicles with cloth seats.

Roof strength ratings are conducted to assess the vehicle’s ability to withstand and provide rollover protection in car accidents by pushing a metal plate against a corner of the car’s roof at constant speed, then measuring the inches of crush.

The Jeep Patriot was given a rating level of Good, as compared against its competitor midsize SUVs.

Side Impact Tests assess protection for occupants if vehicles are hit from the side by large vehicles such as an SUV or pickup. The Jeep Patriot received a Good rating in all measures of side impact testing, except for an “Average” rating for torso injury protection with the optional torso airbags.

Its noteworthy that without the torso airbags, the car was given a Poor rating in this area.
