The Jeep Liberty is a car with looks reminiscent of the classic Jeep family of cars. It is rough and rugged, and built to be used as a no-frills utility vehicle which is where it excels.

This car may not stack up well against others in its class when doing a comparison based on typical street driving but it becomes a handy car with a good selection of interesting options, once you take it for some country or mountain driving.

Jeep Liberty Car Features and Options

The Jeep Liberty compact SUV is available in Limited, Renegade and Sport trims. This car is definitely an outdoorsy vehicle with luxury details and soft fabrics missing from the picture.

Depending on what you’re looking for this may be the right car but the V6 3.7-liter engine with 210 hp does not provide a huge amount of power for the car. Additionally, it only comes with a four speed automatic transmission.

Within the three trim levels, the Liberty does have some nice options to soften it a bit. Standard features on the Sport include automatic headlights, keyless entry, air conditioning, cruise control, a reclining rear seat, satellite radio, and a sound system with 6 speakers and a CD player.

Move up to the next trim level and you get such extras as exterior chrome trim, larger 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and Bluetooth and audio connections, among other things.

The Renegade trim package is geared towards off-road enthusiasts, with optional skid-plates, all-terrain tires, tow hooks and an enhanced 4×4 system.

A full sunroof made of cloth called a “sky slider” is available as an option on all trims, or the regular sunroof can be selected. A Media Center is also available, which includes a DVD player, CD player, optional navigation, and a touch-screen interface.

Jeep Liberty Performance

The Jeep Liberty has considerable capability in the off-road arena and towing capacity that comes in handy.

With optional towing equipment, the Jeep Liberty can handle up to 5,000 pounds. The car has a choice of four-wheel drive systems, with either full-time Selec-Trac II or part-time Command-Trac II.

In driving tests it tended to be sluggish, having worse performance in the 0 to 60 mph acceleration test than most other cars in its compact SUV class, according to Edmunds.com’s performance testing.

Another issue is gas mileage. For the small size of its engine, the Jeep Liberty does not return a good fuel economy. It is about 17 mpg combined, which ranks the same as the Chevy Tahoe with a V-8 powered engine.

The car handles about the same amount of cargo in the back as other cars in its class. The Jeep Liberty may be less well-rounded than other compact SUVs when driving on the streets, but it does live up to its strength as an off-road vehicle, like most other Jeeps.

Vehicle Safety and Reliability

The Jeep Liberty comes with some standard safety features which can help drivers obtain car insurance discounts such as:

  • Stability Control
  • Antilock (ABS) Brakes
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Active front head restraints

In safety tests, the Liberty took more distance to come to a complete stop than the average figure for its class.

It has not yet been rated using the newer more stringent requirements for 2011 Government crash testing, but for 2010, the Jeep Liberty won a 5-star rating for crash tests in all front and side categories.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Jeep Liberty its best rating of “Good” for frontal-offset crash tests and roof tests, but the car received a score of “Marginal” in side crash testing.

The Jeep Liberty has been rated on overall quality by JD Power and Associates, who awarded it a 3.0 out of 5.0. Identifix is a company that rates cars based on their reliability, and the Jeep Liberty has been awarded 5 stars for each the last 5 years.

How much is car insurance for a Jeep Liberty?

The cost to insure a specific car is typically affected by other things besides the car itself. A driver’s age group, the number of points on their driving record, or the city and state they live in could all be additional factors.

Location matters because high-traffic areas or high crime areas cause increased risk in the eyes of car insurance companies.

Insurance companies are also looking increasingly at credit scores, since historically, drivers with poor credit seem to end up having more accidents.

The average cost to insure the Jeep Liberty, based on insurance estimated by Edmunds.com as part of the cost to own the car is $1,561 per year.

This information was based on insurance costs for a driver living in the state of California, which has an average car insurance cost of $1,443. This is close to the national average car insurance cost of $1,440.
