Before you purchase a Ford F-150 pickup truck, you’ll want to have a good idea of how much car insurance costs.

Auto insurance rates are an important component of a vehicle’s total cost of ownership and many consumers forget to consider the cost of insurance until they are at the dealership signing the car loan documents.

For many good drivers the cost of premiums may not come as much of a surprise but they are numerous circumstances where your auto insurance cost can be much higher for a F-150 than you expect.

Compare car insurance for a Ford F-150 by entering your zip code in the box above and read our review below for more information on America’s most popular truck.

About the Ford F-150 Pickup Truck

The Ford F-150 is part of Ford’s immensely popular F-Series pickup truck line, which started in 1948 with the Ford Bonus-Built. It is the most popular vehicle line in the United States, with sales of nearly 34 million as of May 2010.

In 1975, the Ford F-150 was added to the F-Series line to address new fuel efficiency restrictions.

The Ford F-150 is available in 11 models ranging in MSRP from $22,415 for the F-150 XL to $47,995 for the Harley Davidson edition. Buyers can also choose from several cab sizes, including the Regular Cab, which can seat three passengers, and the SuperCab or SuperCrew, both of which can seat up to six passengers.

Specifications for the Ford F-150

Buyers can choose from four engines to meet their personal fuel efficiency and towing needs. The 3.7 liter V6 with 6-speed automatic earns 17 mpg (city driving) and 23 mpg (highway).

This mileage is  slightly less if a larger cab style is selected and towing capacity is reduced a bit with this model.

The 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine, with a 6-speed automatic transmission, delivers slightly lower fuel efficiency than the 3.7 liter V6, averaging about one less mile per gallon. However, it delivers greater towing capacity than the 3.7 liter V6, which many drivers will consider to be an important asset.

More powerful engine options for the Ford F-150 include the 5.0 liter V8 and the 6.2 liter V8. Both of these engines come with electronic ignition systems and 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Their lower fuel efficiency (15/21 mpg and 13/18 mpg, respectively) accompanies substantially higher towing capacity, but buyers should check with their dealer to determine which configuration will best meet their towing needs.

Ford promotes the F-150 as having best-in-class towing capability and payload capability, although certain restrictions apply to these claims.

Ford F-150 Interior Review

Although pickup trucks are not generally known for their luxurious interiors, Ford F-150 owners will not miss out on basic comforts. The F-150 features noise-reduction technology, a spacious cab with lots of storage and a personal safety system.

Backup cameras are available as an add-on.

Ford F-150 Safety Ratings

The Ford F-150 has earned respectable safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, including the highest possible scores in frontal, side and rear-impact tests.

The federal government has not yet tested the most recent 2011 model, but previous models have performed well.

The only deficiency has been in 4-wheel drive models, which have earned 3-star ratings on rollover tests.

Ford F-150 Awards

Car insurance companies love industry ratings and highly rated cars can often lead to car insurance discounts. The Ford F-150 is no stranger to awards having won numerous accolades since its introduction. The 2011 model won “Work Car of the Year” by
