Critics love the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen so much that it earned the #2 spot on U.S. News and World Report’s listing of the top affordable compact wagons on the market.
The Hyundai Elantra Touring came in first, and the 2011 Nissan Juke won third place in this competitive 7-member class. As is the case with other Volkswagens like the GTI, Touareg, and Tiguan, the auto press is smitten with the Jetta SportWagen’s performance.
Car and Driver magazine describes the 2011 SportWagen’s handling as “crisp” and its steering as “tactile.” Consumer Guide’s reviewer describes it as “a bit sporty,” and characterizes its ride as “composed.”
Despite being agile for a wagon, reviewers caution that the 2011 Jetta SportWagen isn’t particularly quick off the line. Although they say its 2.5 liter gasoline-powered engine is sufficient for getting around town, U.S. News explains that most reviewers prefer the optional 2.0 liter TDI Clean Diesel trim, which is both more powerful and more fuel efficient than the base model.

Jetta SportWagen Auto Insurance Rates
Projections provided by the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) indicate that the typical VW Jetta SportWagen driver will pay $5,340 for auto insurance premiums over five years, or about $89 per month.
Both the Dodge Caliber and the Nissan Juke have lower projected rates, at $86 and $79 per month, respectively. Auto insurance rates for the Toyota Matrix and the Hyundai Elantra Touring are expected to be higher than the Jetta SportWagen’s, though.
Anticipated monthly rates for the Matrix are $92 a month, and $97 a month for the Elantra Touring.
Jetta SportWagen Repairs
You’ll spend about $1,422 to repair your 2011 Jetta SportWagen during the initial five years that you own it, the NADA estimates.
If you opted for a Nissan Juke, you’d pay over $150 more, and you’d pay over $50 more if you purchased an Elantra Touring instead. Expected repair bills for the Toyota Matrix are just a few dollars less than those for the SportWagen.
If you go with the base model VW SportWagen, the NADA reports that you probably won’t owe anything for repairs during the first two years of ownership, since your vehicle will be covered by Volkswagen’s 36,000 mile/3-year New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Since most drivers put about 15,000 miles per year on their vehicles, it’s likely that your warranty will expire during the third year you own your SportWagen, and you’ll owe just under $350 for repairs. Fourth- and fifth-year repair costs will total about $547 each year, the NADA predicts.
Jetta SportWagen Routine Maintenance
In addition to its New Vehicle Limited Warranty, the 2011 Jetta SportWagen is also covered under a Carefree Maintenance program that extends for three years or until your odometer hits 36,000 miles.
Since most drivers are projected to reach 36,000 miles during the middle of their vehicles’ third years, this is when maintenance bills will begin to arrive, according to the NADA.
The third-year maintenance bill for the typical VW SportWagen driver will be roughly $446, and the tune-up that’s likely to be required during year four will run you about $1,456.
For year five, the NADA expects that you’ll only pay about $185 for scheduled maintenance. This all tallies up to a total 5-year maintenance bill of around $2,087.
2011 VW SportWagen Crash Test Results
The Jetta SportWagen earned the highest available scores on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash tests for front impacts, rollovers, and rear and side impacts. It also offers electronic stabilization control as a standard feature.
Together, these attributes allow the Jetta SportWagen to qualify as a 2011 “Top Safety Pick.” This vehicle hasn’t been evaluated yet by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Safety Features for the Jetta SportWagen
The 2011 Jetta SportWagen incorporates clever safety features like “pinch protection” for its power windows, as well as more substantial features like anti-slip regulation. This helps to prevent your wheels from spinning when you attempt to accelerate.

If you’re looking for a problem-free driving experience, you might want to think twice about buying a Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen. Its Predicted Reliability score from J.D. Power and Associates is only a 6.0 out of 10 possible points.
For this class a score of 6.0 isn’t awful, since the Juke and Caliber also earned 6.0s, and the Chevrolet HHR only rated a 5.0. However, the Matrix scored an 8.0 and the Elantra Touring earned a 9.0.
Jetta SportWagen Utility
If you’re purchasing a compact wagon, you’re probably looking for substantial passenger and cargo space. The Jetta SportWagen delivers, with a 32.8-cubic foot cargo area that expands to nearly 70 cubic feet when you fold down the vehicle’s back seats.
Edmunds says that the 2011 SportWagen’s maximum cargo space is greater than what you’ll find in compact SUVs like the VW Tiguan, the Chevy Equinox, and the Kia Sportage.
It also beats the Toyota Matrix’s 49.9-cubic foot cargo bay and the 65.3-cubic foot cargo space offered by the Hyundai Elantra Touring. Reviewers say the SportWagen’s front seats are spacious, but the rear seat is a tight fit for most adults.
