Grange Auto Insurance began when its founder, John C. Haaf, wanted to provide a more diverse group of insurance products to a wider customer base than many contemporary auto insurance companies offered. He began with a diversified company structure, and that has continued to the present time.

The company has grown to have annual revenues of $1.3 billion, and sells auto, home, life and business insurance. The company is the parent of eight subsidiaries, specializing in auto, casualty, home, and life policies.

Grange Auto Insurance Ratings

Grange Insurance is a financially stable company, with an A.M. Best rating of A (“Excellent”), indicating a strong financial base. The diversity of the company helps it to maintain the ability to pay claims and manage assets.

Grange Insurance has managed to keep its company to a size which, through diversification, is able to manage claims and invest carefully, resulting in dividends for the policyholders.

Grange Auto Insurance Coverage Options

As with most auto insurance companies, Grange Insurance offers standards liability insurance policies with limits designed to meet each state’s requirements.

The company also offers supplemental policies such as medical payments, collision, comprehensive, personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage.

Grange Insurance also offers optional coverage, such as towing reimbursement, rental car payments, loan/lease programs, and sound or video equipment insurance, including coverage for CDs and DVDs.

Auto Insurance Discounts available from Grange

Discounts are an important part of the way you can keep your premiums low, and the company gives you a variety of ways to save on your auto insurance rates.

Grange Insurance offers multi-policy and multi-vehicle discounts, so if you buy all your insurance from Grange, you will pay less for each policy. You can also get an accident-free discount, a good student discount, and credit for completion of defensive driver courses.

You can get a discount for safety equipment on your vehicle, such as passive restraints, or for owning a hybrid vehicle. If you pay your bill in full each payment cycle, you will also receive a discount for full payment.

Grange Auto Insurance Customer Service Review

While Grange Insurance claims a 90% customer satisfaction rating, independent ratings are slightly lower. J.D. Power and Associates, an independent firm which rates insurance companies yearly by customer input, gave Grange Insurance an “average” rating for customer satisfaction in its 2011 report.

The company scored three out of five stars, or “average,” in overall customer satisfaction, policy offerings, and contacting the insurer. However, Grange Insurance received only two out of five stars, or “below average,” for pricing and billing.

Grange Insurance’s ranking on J.D. Power’s Customer Satisfaction Index was 777 out of 1,000 points, which placed it 16th out of the 33 companies in the survey, or almost exactly in the middle of the rankings.

These ratings, of course, are not the entire story of Grange Insurance’s dealings with its customer base. Due to the fact that Grange Insurance is only offered in a few states, many customers may not have access to this insurance, so the pool of surveyed customers is necessarily smaller than for larger insurers.

It is also possible that the size of the company can actually raise its customer service satisfaction rate, as the company can serve specific needs in the states in which it does business. Because the company is more “local,” it may be better able to understand the people it serves.

On the other hand, smaller companies are often less adept at meeting the needs of large groups of people, and as the company expands, customer service can sometimes suffer. Ultimately, the best way to decide if you like the company is to talk to a representative or agent, and make a determination based on your impressions.

Where can you buy Grange Auto Insurance?

Grange sells its products through a network of independent agents, and prides itself on its quick response with local claims examiners and adjustors.

By working through independent agents, Grange is able to provide local service to its customers without a large overhead caused by dedicated agents.

Of course, you can also talk directly to agents through the website or you can phone the company and talk to a representative if you have questions, concerns, or claims.
