Esurance History

Many younger insurance buyers are unaware of just how unique Esurance is among auto insurance companies. Prior to the advent of the internet drivers were restricted to searching for insurance by making interminable phone calls or visiting multiple agents.

Today, with just a few mouse clicks, you can have your custom-made policy ready and begin managing your account online.

Esurance was built on the premise that an internet-only insurance company would be the wave of the future. So far, the company has been able to live up to its motto of “Technology when you want it; people when you don’t.”

This business model has been the Esurance model since its inception; primarily internet-driven interactions with some phone support.

Part of the Allstate family, Esurance does approximately $900 million worth of business each year.

About The General Auto Insurance Company

The General Automobile Insurance Services, Inc., is the full name of the company of what is commonly known as “The General.” It is a subsidiary of an older insurance firm known as PCG Holdings Corp., which has been selling insurance in one form or another since 1963.

Although popular notion sometimes casts it as a “secondary market” company the General still is a very solid auto insurance company.

The General’s majority market lies in insuring less-than-perfect drivers however the company itself received a financial rating from A. M. Best of A-, or “Excellent,” proving that the company’s financial structure is in no way “second best.”

The General specializes in flexible financing options and taking on drivers other companies are reluctant to insure, due to poor driving history, bad credit, or both.

Esurance Customer Satisfaction Ratings

Esurance’s unique approach to customer service has not proven to be extremely popular with some customers. It is very possible that customers are lured to Esurance by good television advertising and internet commercials, without realizing what it will mean to them to do most of their business online.

Whatever the case, many customers seem to be dissatisfied with Esurance’s approach to customer service.

In the J. D. Power and Associates 2011 survey of customer satisfaction among auto insurers, Esurance rated only two out of five stars in three of the categories, including overall satisfaction, billing and payment, and contacting the insurer.

This translates to a “below average” rating in these areas. In the categories of policy offerings and pricing, Esurance scored three out of five stars, or “average.”

The company’s overall score for the Customer Satisfaction Index was 763, which placed it 24th out of the 33 companies surveyed.

The General Customer Satisfaction

It is very difficult to get hard data on customer satisfaction ratings for The General, because standard assessment groups like J. D. Power and Associates do not rate this company.

However, it is possible that The General customers sometimes complain about the company’s service not due to a breakdown in customer representative performance, but because they may already be facing many negative factors in their car insurance situations.

Being cancelled, having premiums increased, and other negative impacts which occur from poor driving or bad credit may prompt some customers to be dissatisfied with any insurance company.

The General’s advertising indicates that the company is willing to be very flexible with payment policies and other factors affecting your insurance needs, so it might be worth getting a quote just to see what this insurance would cost you, especially if you have something negative on your driving record.

Which auto insurance company is better – Esurance or The General Auto Insurance Company?

Neither company can boast very high customer satisfaction ratings according to some reviewers but both cater to a very discrete group of drivers.

If you prefer online interactions Esurance may be the better fit but drivers with very special auto insurance needs can often find better plans with the General.

Both companies are highly respected in the industry but at the end of the day choosing any auto insurance company will come down to your unique needs in a provider.
