About Esurance

Esurance is the leading online automobile insurance business. Their headquarters are located in San Franciso, California. They sell policies directly to customers through their website. They also have affiliated online agents.

The company was started in 1998 to capitalize on the Internet boom and address younger consumers.

The company focuses on convenience, affordability and being environmental friendly. They market their services as being available everywhere.

At their website, customers can compare premiums of different companies to those of Esurance. They also promise a quote in less than six minutes.

Esurance has partnered with a variety of sports teams to showcase their environmental concern. They have organized “Go Green” events that feature items like reusable grocery bags.

In addition, half of their electronic data is stored on outsourced servers housed in a building that is certified by the United States Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system.

Progressive Insurance History

In 1937, two Cleveland attorneys, Joe Lewis and Jack Green, participated in a state-sponsored investigation of a group of insurance salesmen. The result was that they decided to form an insurance company.

After obtaining insurance licenses, they used $10,000 borrowed from Lewis’s mother-in-law to purchase five small auto service busineses. They reorganized and officially opened the Progressive Mutual Insurance Company that same year.

Unfortunately, the business quickly lost money. In the first year, the company wrote less than $10,000 in new policies. It wasn’t until World War II that the business started showing consistent proftis.

In the early 1950s the insurance industry started to pool their clients into groups based on indicators like age and driving record. Then they started insuring only the least risky candidates revealed by this research.

Progressive saw an opportunity, and marketed itself towards the riskier groups. This brought large profits to the firm. In 1960 the company expanded outside of Ohio, and in 1963 premium revenues from other states were over $5,000,000.

Esurance Product Offerings

This company has many standard policies available. They cover a wide spectrum of situations, from bodily injury to towing. Esurance also offers coverage for collisions, property damage, fire, theft, medical payments resulting from an accident and coverage for family members of the insured.

Customers can also take advantage of many car insurance discounts such as:

  • Single Parents
  • Drivers with good records
  • Customers who insure multiple cars
  • Insured vehicles with additional safety devices
  • Student drivers with good grades
  • Elderly drivers who take safety courses
  • Specific careers
  • Customers who pay their premiums upfront

Progressive Product Offerings

In addition to regular coverage options, Progressive offers some unique products and benefits. These special coverages are included under or alongside their standard policies, such as collision or comprehensive.

One of these uncommon policies is pet injury coverage. If a customer’s pet, such as a dog or a cat, is injured while riding in the insured vehicle, Progressive will cover up to $1,000 of veterinary bills.

This type of coverage is not regular pet insurance; it is designed to protect pets only when they are inside automobiles.

The company will also pay the difference between any loans or leases outstanding on the car and what their collision or comprehensive insurance covers. This is called GAP insurance or as Progressive calls it, loan/lease payoff coverage.

Progressive gives loyalty rewards to policyholders the longer they remain with the company. These rewards take the form of premium discounts or benefits such as unlimited small claims forgiveness.

Car Insurance Comparison between Esurance and Progressive

To help customers choose between different companies, each year a national survey of customers of major car insurance companies takes place. This survey, administered by J.D. Power and Associates, is designed to provide clear indicators of customer satisfaction with each company.

All of them are assigned a number from 2 to 5. Each of these four numbers represents the level of satisfaction a plurality of customers reported.

The 2010 survey reveals no difference in the level of customer satisfaction in pricing for both Esurance and Progressive. They are both ranked at a 3, which is about average.

Customers apparently think that both companies are average in the way they price their policies for different levels of coverage.

Esurance or Progressive?

Both of these insurers rank at a 3 for overall satisfaction, billing and payment and pricing. They differ significantly in contacting the insurer and policy offerings. Progressive has a 3 in contacting the insurer, but Esurance has a 2.

Progressive also outranks Esurance in policy offerings. Progressive has a 4 in this area and Esurance has a 3.

The relative strengths and weaknesses between these two companies are the deciding factors. Some customers may like the convenience and environmental friendliness of Esurance.

Others may prefer the unique benefits and coverages of Progressive.

The survey results reveal a clear difference but only the customer can choose between the companies so start your auto insurance comparison search today and get free car insurance quotes in your ZIP code.
