Esurance History

Esurance began as an internet venture and quickly grew into an overnight sensation. Esurance operates primarily through internet sales and management of customer insurance accounts.

Young people in particular are targeted by Esurance’s television advertising, although the company has recently moved into more adult-friendly commercials.

A group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs founded Esurance and was quickly picked up by larger companies wishing to expand into the internet insurance market. The company is currently owned by the Allstate group of companies.

Liberty Mutual History

Liberty Mutual was founded in 1912 in Massachusetts to provide workers’ compensation insurance coverage. Today, the company is a nationwide insurer doing over $33.2 billion worth of business each year, and employing more than 45,000 people worldwide.

Liberty Mutual also manages its own Research Institute for Safety, dedicated to research designed to improve safety for drivers all over the country, to bring companies up to high safety standards and to assist with ergonomic improvements for both drivers and workers.

Esurance Customer Satisfaction

Despite Esurance’s innovative online format, and the fact the company does provide live support, Esurance’s customer service satisfaction ratings have remained fairly low. On the J. D. Power and Associates 2011 Customer Satisfaction Index, Esurance scored only a 763 out of 1,000, leaving it in 24th place among 33 companies examined.

Esurance’s low numbers were primarily due to low customer satisfaction in the areas of billing and payment and contacting the insurer. This gives credence to the idea that Esurance customers are not completely happy with the company’s reliance on online interactions.

The company scored higher, achieving an “average” rating, in the areas of pricing and policy offerings, which indicates that customers were happier with Esurance’s products than with its service.

Liberty Mutual Customer Satisfaction

Liberty Mutual fared more favorably in the J. D. Power and Associates rankings. With a score of 771, Liberty Mutual took 19th place out of 33 companies in the survey.

Liberty Mutual scored three out of five stars (or average) in every category, including overall customer satisfaction, billing and payment, pricing, policy offerings and contacting the insurer.

Liberty Mutual customers, while not giving the company rave reviews, seemed to be satisfied with the company’s products as well as its service.

Which auto insurance provider is better – Esurance or Liberty Mutual?

While choosing an auto insurance company is an extremely personal decision, and should be based on a variety of factors, there are some commonalities which can make your decision easier.

When looking for a company, you want one with a sound financial basis. While both Esurance and Liberty Mutual seem to have good financial backing, there is no doubt that Liberty Mutual is the older and more established company of the two and that its assets are much greater.

However, with the recent acquisition of Esurance by Allstate some agree that Esurance now has just as strong financial stability.

Customer service ratings are, of course, subjective and open to interpretation. However, the fact that Liberty Mutual has such high ratings when compared to Esurance may be indicative of a better customer-service framework and the ability to connect with customers on a more personal basis.

It is possible that Liberty Mutual’s use of independent agents plays a role in this factor.

Finally, if you are seeking a company which allows you to manage your own account and do the vast majority of your business online, you will want to consider the history of each company.

Liberty Mutual has “grown into” its internet presence, while Esurance has never been anything except internet-based.

For a younger and more digitally-aware audience, the comfort level with internet-related business displayed by Esurance may be an advantage.

No matter which company you choose, be sure to discuss your policy needs with an agent or representative of each company before committing to any policies.

Often, a five or ten minute conversation with a representative will give you a truly honest picture of what your dealings with the company will be like in the future.
