About EMC Insurance

The EMC Insurance Group is a small-cap publicly-held corporation which was formed in 1972. The parent company was founded in 1911, and is based in Des Moines, Iowa.

The company employs around 2,100 people in 16 branch offices around the nation. The company has branched out through the years into a national insurer, although personal insurance is not as large a part of the company’s sales as business insurance.

EMC particularly focuses on small businesses, which may find it difficult to find affordable insurance and risk management with the larger companies.

EMC Insurance Ratings

In May of 2010, A.M. Best increased EMC Insurance’s rating from “stable” to “excellent” (A-), primarily due to EMC’s revised handling of claims and improved risk management, which opened better underwriting options to the company.

Weather losses and natural disasters had impacted the company’s 2008 and 2009 ratings, but with a revised infrastructure, the company hopes to continue the trend toward greater financial stability.

EMC Insurance Coverage Options

The company offers business insurance, personal insurance, and loss management. The business insurance branch accounts for the largest portion of EMC’s earnings, although the company does provide a substantial amount of personal life and auto insurance, as well as homeowners and umbrella coverage.

EMC’s prices remain relatively competitive, especially for smaller or harder-to-insure individuals and companies, although the company’s products are not available in every market.

The auto insurance division of EMC offers a variety of policies for the car owner. The company currently offers typical liability insurance protection and supplemental auto insurance comparable to all major auto insurance companies.

EMC also has optional add-ons for transportation expenses, after-market sound and video equipment, and loan or lease coverage.

EMC allows customers to craft a policy which will work for them, with the help of an independent agent or in consultation with the company directly.

EMC Auto Insurance Discounts

EMC also offers a variety of auto insurance discounts which help keep premiums low. Policyholders can even receive discounts under the a “bonus renewal plan” where drivers receive extra benefits after being insured for 36 months including accident surcharge waivers from your first at-fault accident.

You can also receive discounts for multi-car and multi-policy coverage by combining all your insurance with EMC. If you have a good driving record, you can get the “accident free” discount, as well.

Additional discounts are good student and driver’s education discounts, defensive driving discounts, and safety equipment discounts for having passive restraints and antilock brakes on your vehicle.

EMC Customer Service Review

EMC offers a variety of payment plans and options for paying your bill through online services, by credit card or checking account automatic deductions, and by mail.

The EMC website also offers a variety of online claims service and other contact options for the company. You can view, manage, and pay your bill from your computer through EMC’s website.

The company’s website received the Platinum and Gold Awards in the 2010 Hermes Creative Awards competition for most innovative design, and is extremely user-friendly and easy to navigate.

Although the company is not reviewed by such assessments as the J.D. Power and Associates’ annual customer satisfaction review due to its size, other indicators show that customer satisfaction with EMC remains high.

In a 2011 article in “Rough Notes” magazine, the company’s CEO, Bruce Kelly, pointed out that the company’s focus was still on the local agents who sell its products.

The company does business in 42 states, and believes that the “full service” offered by the local agents is what gives EMC its customer satisfaction factor. Because the company supports the agency system so uniformly, most business is handled by a local person, rather than through a faceless company central office, giving customers a feeling of personal service.

The Forbes “Most Trustworthy” award is also an indicator that customer satisfaction with the company remains high.

EMC is sold primarily through an independent agency network. EMC has long believed that the personal service offered by a face-to-face agency contact is the key to its success, so the company supports a large network of independent agents throughout the country.

You can find one near you on the company’s website, or by talking to your own local agent to see if he or she offers EMC products.
