Originally organized to provide automobile insurance the company today offers homeowner’s, marine and umbrella policies, as well.

Amica is organized as a mutual insurance company (meaning the policyholders, rather than stockholders, own the company) and this approach has helped provide a deep sense of pride and involvement in the company while also allowing policyholders the benefit of dividends if the company does well.

Amica currently does over $1.6 billion in business each year, and employs over 3,000 people in branch offices around the United States. The company is based in Lincoln, Rhode Island and relies heavily on direct marketing to advertise its products.

USAA History

USAA – an acronym for the United Services Automobile Association – was founded in 1922 by Army officers who wanted to provide low-cost insurance to military families. Eventually, the insurance company branched out into other areas, such as homeowner’s, life insurance, and financial advising.

The company is currently a Fortune 500 firm which specializes in investing and insurance for military personnel, veterans and their families.

USAA conducts the bulk of its business through direct marketing and television advertising, and has a large online presence.

Most of USAA’s business is done through its website and the company does over $9 billion in business each year, employing over 24,000 people with corporate headquarters in San Antonio, Texas.

Amica Customer Satisfaction Ratings

Amica has won the J. D. Power and Associates number-one spot in customer satisfaction for the last twelve years, primarily due to its high scores on the Customer Satisfaction Index, a rating scale which compares the company to others similar in size and market share.

Amica scored five out of five stars in every J. D. Power category, including policy offerings, overall customer satisfaction, contacting the insurer, billing and payment and pricing.

Amica’s score on the Customer Satisfaction Index was 843 out of a possible 1,000 points, giving it the number one position of the 33 companies reviewed.

Obviously, customers are satisfied with Amica’s service. Despite the fact that the company does not employ a large number of agents, and most of its business is conducted through internet and phone interactions, customers seem to be very pleased with the quality of customer service.

USAA Customer Satisfaction Ratings

USAA, surprisingly, outscored even Amica, the winner of the J. D. Power award for 2011, in customer service ratings. USAA scored 898 points out of 1,000, a full fifty points better than Amica. USAA also scored five out of five stars in each of the J. D. Power categories.

USAA, however, was not named “number one” in customer satisfaction, due to the fact that the company is open only to military personnel. Because the customer base is limited, J. D. Power could not rank the company alongside the other major insurance providers.

In order to get USAA automobile insurance, you must be a current or former military serviceperson, or the dependent or former dependent of military personnel.
