Along with several other hardtop convertibles, including the Lexus IS, the Infiniti G37, and the BMW 3 Series, the Volvo C70 coupe was recast for the 2011 model year with a new exterior that Car and Driver calls “handsome” and AutoWeek describes as “gorgeous.”

New interior features include satellite radio and a redesigned center console, and Volvo has eliminated the manual transmission option, as well as the premium package that was available for the 2010 model year.

Reviewers give the revamped C70 coupe a thumbs-up for its comfortable driver’s seat and advanced safety features. However, they are less enthusiastic about the Volvo C70’s performance.

Edmunds describes it as “mediocre,” and Car and Driver pans its handling as “dull.” U.S. News and World Report says that this convertible coupe is just fine for cruising, but its 5-cylinder turbocharged engine is no match for the 3 Series’ 3.0 liter I6 engine, or the G37’s 3.7 liter V6. U.S.

News reports that the front-wheel drive C70 features solid braking performance, but steering is numb and body roll is noticeable during cornering.

Nonetheless, drivers who simply want a stylish convertible for cruising may look no further. To discover how much it costs insure a Volvo C70 coupe compared to similar vehicles, read on.

Auto Insurance for the Volvo C70

The typical Volvo C70 owner will pay $8,553 over five years to insure this vehicle, reports Edmunds. That figure breaks down to $1,710 per year, or $143 each month.

That compares well to the annual auto insurance premiums of $1,788 that Edmunds projects for drivers of the BMW 3 Series convertible, and it compares extremely well to the roughly $2,458 that Infiniti G37 convertible owners can expect to pay for auto insurance.

Edmunds projects that auto insurance rates for the Lexus IS 250 C convertible will also be higher than the C70’s, at about $2,252 annually.

Maintaining Your Volvo C70

According to Edmunds’ estimates, the average driver will pay about $2,365 over five years to maintain the Volvo C70, with no maintenance costs at all during the first few years.

Volvo offers free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles that you own your vehicle. Maintenance costs for the Infiniti G37 convertible are anticipated to be $4,368 spread out over the first five years of ownership.

The Lexus IS convertible could cost $5,972 or more to maintain for five years, warns Edmunds.

Like Volvo, BMW offers free scheduled maintenance for the first few years you own the vehicle, so the 3 Series’ estimated maintenance payments are only $3,782 over five years.

What are the best-selling luxury convertibles in America?

Repairing Your Volvo C70

While the Volvo C70 is one of the most affordable upscale convertibles to insure and maintain, its repair costs do not follow this pattern.

At $1,915, according to Edmunds’ data, 5-year repair costs for the C70 coupe are several hundred dollars higher than those for the Infiniti G37 or the Lexus IS.

They are a bit lower than the 2011 BMW 3 Series convertible’s estimated repair costs of $2,611, though.

Volvo C70 Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates that an average Volvo C70 driver can expect gas mileage of 19 city mpg and 28 mpg on the highway. This makes it a good value if you’re interested in saving at the pump.

Lexus’ IS convertible comes close to matching the C70’s fuel efficiency, with an EPA rating of 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg in highway driving. Although Infiniti’s G37 and BMW’s 3 Series both offer superior power, drivers will pay for this with inferior fuel economy.

The G37 convertible gets just 17 city mpg and 25 highway mpg. The 3 Series matches the G37’s city mileage, but it gets one additional mile per gallon on the highway.

Warranty and Reliability for the Volvo C70

In addition to the 3-year/36,000 mile scheduled maintenance plan that Volvo offers, the company also warrants its vehicles for four years or 50,000 miles. This is the same warranty that BMW, Mercedes, and most other luxury car makers offer.

One perk that’s unique to Volvo is the complimentary roadside service that the company offers for the vehicle’s entire life. This service is even transferable to new owners.

The Volvo C70 convertible’s reliability score is a 7.0 on J.D. Power and Associates’ 10-point scale. This is better than the score of 6.0 that BMW’s 3 Series earned, but the Lexus IS was awarded a score of 9.0. The Infiniti G37 has not been scored yet.

Volvo C70 Safety Ratings

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Volvo C70 top scores for its ability to protect its occupants when a front-end or side-impact collision occurs.

The federal government hasn’t performed its safety tests on the 2011 C70 yet. Despite the paucity of data on the C70’s safety performance, the vehicle offers several standard safety features that many competitors can’t match.

For instance, U.S. News reports that the C70 was the first convertible on the market to incorporate side curtain head air bags for all passengers. It says that the C70 is also one of the few convertibles to offer whiplash protection headrests for both front- and rear-seat occupants.

Another reassuring safety system you’ll find on the 2011 Volvo C70 is a Rollover Protection System. According to Volvo, this system uses a gyroscope to measure the car’s angle relative to the ground.

If a rollover seems imminent, it will tighten the C70’s seat belts, extend a system of roll bars, and activate the C70’s air bags.
